NHC Speaks To Losing Ground - Thomas Neil

Our intrepid reporter Thomas Neil has been busy with interviews and reviews recently, and here is another one from his reporters bag, a cracking, snappy wee chat with Losing Ground!

So first of how did you all meet?

Being brothers, Blair and Connell met when Connell was born, and the rest of us met him much later on in life. We were put in touch with each other when Jack had started the band really, and things seemed to fall into place quite quickly a few years ago.

Where are you all from?

How long have you been playing your respective instruments?

We've all been playing for a good few years. Andrew played guitar before picking up the mandolin, that was just a few years ago.

What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

Alt rock/punk, it’s a hard one to pin down.

What are your influences?

Arab Strap, Every Time I Die, Biffy Clyro, Gaslight Anthem.

Do you do covers and if so what’s your go to?

We don’t do covers.

What if anything does your name mean/why are you called that?

It's a vague reference to a Defeater lyric.

Do you have a process for writing your songs? /Which of you writes the songs?

Jack tends to tackle the lyrics, we then form a song together around those with different ideas.

What are your rehearsals generally like?

Three hours of absolute, unadulterated carnage. We tend to practice weekly, so it depends what we have coming up. Sometimes we will focus on writing other times we will run through our set list a few times.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

I think the main challenges are maintaining what we feel are high standards. We’re always looking to progress and better ourselves. It’s going well so far.

How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?

Our music is available on Spotify, iTunes and all digital platforms.  We also have physical EP copies for sale online www.losingground.bandcamp.com and at all our shows!

Have you released anything yet/if you have how has it gone down and are you planning anything for the near future?

We recently released our EP "Old Glory" with a music video for Fundamental, which has gained some really positive feedback!

Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

We've played over 70 shows since we started and each year we get busier and busier.  We’ve toured across Scotland a few times. Our EP launch night at the 13th Note was special, and every time we play Edinburgh it gets better and better.  We headlined King Tut’s in the summer which was a great honour for us and we are looking forward to playing with Ferocious Dog at St Lukes in February. Before that we have a home town show at Fanny By Gaslight on 28th December.

What do you think about downloading music online?

It's just progress. Music has to keep up with the rest of the world. It makes all music more accessible to people so it has to be a good thing.

What's your outlook on the record industry today?

It's not really something we think too much about. We just concentrate on what we are doing as a band and have as much fun as we can doing what we love.
